The Ugly Duckling Story

Well, technically this is about a little gosling, but hey – if a man can be named Fox then a gosling can be called Duckling.

It was a fairly bleak day as I was coming home from the park and just as I was about to cross the Little Creek (Old Courthouse) I heard a fairly desperate and sustained goose cry from the pond – almost as if one of the Canada geese, which sometimes camp there, fell into some kind of a trap.

But soon it transpired that what I heard was a maternal cry rather than distress call. A small Duckling wandered away from the pond to the creek side and had trouble finding its parents (the protagonist is hiding under a leaf in the center).
So I stepped back a bit and prompted the little adventurer to cross the path.
It literally darted across the trail…
…tumbled down the pond side of the levee…
…and swam toward its parents.
Family reunion was accompanied with some choice words from mother Goose.
But the Duckling was unstoppable. In a few minutes, it was exploring the banks again – this time under close parental supervision (the Duckling is in the lower center).
Eventually, the whole family settled for a picnic on the Eastern shore.
And that is where I left them to their fate.
