First Time Campers

Every half year, a group of local 5th and 6th graders gets to spend a weekend in an improvised camp in the park meadow and experience first hand the magic and tranquility of nature.

The event is organized by local scout organizations and co-sponsored by the Wolf Trap NP and FOWT. This Fall’s natural extravaganza was held on Oct 13-14.

First scout leaders arrived on Saturday to make the necessary preparations.
Sunday morning, it was all quiet on the Meadow Front.
But troops started arriving soon…
…and filled the base camp with youthful chatter.
The basic infrastructure was set up in no time.
Only the wind did not show up to float the kites.
Gazebo became the makeshift food dispatch.
The nearby Wolf Trap pond hosted the fly fishing activities.
But it was only for sport.
Meanwhile, archers tested their aim in the meadow.
And the results were impressive.
In the wooded area between the creek and the meadow,
campers learned a thing or two about Mother Nature.
The weather was overcast, but (fortunately) no rain.
Monday morning, however, brought a dazzling and warm Autumn day.
An artificial climbing wall has parked in the back lot.
Campers were properly outfitted…
…and tried their luck.
Some made it to the top.
But all good things have to come to an end.
By Monday afternoon, the Pavilion area was nearly back to normal.
